COMPANY PROFILE
With a trajectory that spans more than 70 years, Filmax is one of the longest-standing Spanish audiovisual brands. Based in Barcelona, it brings together all areas of the screen industry: from the development of the idea to its exhibition, including production, distribution and international sales. Its commitment to this multifaceted approach led the label to become a pioneer in Spain by creating the first independent film and television studio in the country.
Since the acquisition of the brand by Julio Fernández in 1987, and after Carlos Fernández took its leadership in 2010 as president and CEO, Filmax has produced more than 100 feature films; productions that have been awarded, acclaimed and projected internationally such as THE MACHINIST (2004), with Christian Bale and directed by Brad Anderson; THE PERFUME (2006) a fantastical thriller directed by Tom Tykwer; the horror saga [REC] (2007 – 2014), directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza; TRANSSIBERIAN (Brad Anderson, 2008) with Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer; THE WAY (Emilio Estévez, 2009), a coproduction between Spain and the United States starring Martin Sheen, and SLEEP TIGHT (Jaume Balagueró, 2011), a thriller with Luis Tosar and Marta Etura.
More recently, Filmax has produced for the big screen films such as 100 METRES (Marcel Barrena, 2016), an amazing story of a man fighting against all odds; the supernatural thriller MUSE (2017), directed by Jaume Balagueró and starring Elliot Cowan, Ana Ularu, Leonor Watling, Franka Potente, and Christopher Lloyd; CROSS THE LINE (2020) an electrifying thriller directed by David Victori and starring Mario Casas; the erotic comedy SWINGERS (Paco Caballero, 2021), with a great ensemble cast including Ernesto Alterio, Raúl Arévalo, Anna Castillo, Álvaro Cervantes, María León and Verónica Echegui; and LEMON AND POPPY SEED CAKE, a drama directed by Benito Zambrano which was nominated to the Goya Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Last year, Filmax released the supernatural drama THE CHAPEL (Carlota Pereda, 2022), coproduced with Bixagu Entertainment and starring Belén Rueda and Maia Zaitegi and THE TEACHER WHO PROMISED THE SEA (Patricia Font, 2022) a period drama coproduced with Minoria Absoluta and Lastor Media and starring EnricAuquer and Laia Costa.
This year, JUMPING THE FENCE (2023) has reached the big screen. A social drama directed by Benito Zambrano and coproduced with Cine365 Films and Noodles Productions, which chronicles the journey full of dangers of the migrants who cross the fence that separates Morocco from Spain in Northern Africa.
Filmax has also embarked in the production of documentary features such as [REC] HORROR WITHOUT PAUSE (2022), featuring Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, and ÁNGEL NIETO: THE MAN WHO DEFEATED TIME (Hugo Stuven, 2022), a film that explores the life and achievements of the most successful motorcycle pilot in the history of Spain.
The label also stands out for being one of the Spanish brands that has invested the most in animation, producing films such as SNOWFLAKE (Andrés G. Schaer, 2011), which mixed life action and animation; NOCTURNA (Víctor Maldonado and Adrián García, 2007); EL CID: THE LEGEND (José Pozo, 2003); and the two films which have as their protagonist the mouse Pérez: THE HAIRY TOOTH FAIRY (Juan Pablo Buscarini, 2006) and its sequel, directed by Andrés G. Schaer in 2007. More recently, Filmax participated in the production of TURU, THE WACKY HEN (Víctor Monigote and Eduardo Gondell, 2020), a new animation feature inspired by a famous children’s song. The film won the Goya Award for Best Animated Feature, adding to the previous five already awarded to Filmax in this category.
For television, the label has produced the series RED BRACELETS, the first Spanish series to win an Emmy Kids Award (2011, Televisió de Catalunya); DATING IN BARCELONA (2015, Televisió de Catalunya); I KNOW WHO YOU ARE (2017) - a gripping thriller broadcast nationally on prime-time by Telecinco with excellent audience ratings that was also broadcast by BBC Four in the United Kingdom - and WELCOME TO THE FAMILY (2018 and 2019, Televisió de Catalunya). This show can also be seen on Netflix. The platform commissioned as well the original mini-series THREE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS (2019) and charged Filmax with the production of its fantasy/thriller series FERIA: THE DARKEST LIGHT, directed by Jorge Dorado and Carles Torrens.
Filmax’s latest television productions are the two seasons of the mystery thriller EVERYONE LIES (2022 and 2023, Movistar+); the autobiographical drama SELFTAPE (2023), Filmin’s second original series and the two seasons of the new production of DATING IN BARCELONA (2023 and 2024) created for Amazon Prime Video and Televisió de Catalunya.
